External walls insulation benefits

External wall insulation is a solution for these types of properties, which do not have cavity walls. Although this type of insulation is more costly than cavity wall due to the process involved but the potential savings on your bills will be bigger too as much as £340* to £400* Per year. External wall insulation involves fixing a layer of insulation material to the wall, then covering it with a special type of render. Insulating boards of around 90-120mm thickness are attached to the exterior walls using adhesive and special fixers. The boards are then covered with a protective, re-enforcing mesh which is then rendered. Once the external walls insulation applied correctly, then your home will be warm very quick and following other benefits:

  • Reduction in heat loss and significant cut to your heating bill
  • No Need to leave the heating on for longer period
  • Insulation will improve the appearance of your house with wide range of colours
  • Thermal performance would lead an overall increase of your home value
  • Save Money on your bills & also reduce CO2 around 1.8 tons per/Y
  • No loss of internal living space as insulation will be on the outside walls.
  • No need to move furniture or fitting while works taking place
  • No need for internal re-decoration required as work take place out side
  • Condensation & Cold Bridging Risk is eliminated as building wrapped with insulation
  • Can be applied without disruption to the household
  • Renews the appearance of outer walls
  • Better weather proofing and sound resistance
  • Fills cracks and gaps in the brickwork, which will reduce draughts
  • Increases the life of your walls by protecting the brickwork
  • Reduces condensation on internal walls and can help prevent damp

Typical heat loss of a home

Solid wall insulation let through twice as much heat as cavity walls a rough guide around 35% but they can be insulated from outside walls and will cut heating costs considerably. If the house was built before 1925, its most probably have solid wall rather than cavity walls. Cavity walls have two layers of brick with little gap in between them unlikely solid walls have no such gap and as a result they let more heat through therefore warmth cannot be retained but the good news is solid walls insulation can be applied from the outside or inside. In relation to solid wall insulation it has to be made sure insulation complies with the current Building Regulations and the main condition to meet is the thermal performance of the insulated wall. In England or Wales solid wall insulation must achieve U-value of no more than 0.30 W/m2K. The U-value is a measure of how quickly heat will pass through the wall - as a rough guide 90-120mm of insulation will be used to achieve 0.30 W/m2K. We will ensure that insulation process meet the standard.

Energy performance certificate rating

EPC changes coming into effect in early 2018, property owners should be considering which energy-efficient measures to implement to increase the EPC rating. Solid wall insulation is an effective way to improve the EPC rating of a home & will make the home attractive to future tenants and help to save money on the bills. If the EPC rating on a property is below E and you are thinking about where to start making changes then solid wall insulation is one of the ways to reduce heat loss and improve your EPC rating with an available grant. Solid wall insulation can be installed with the help of ECO grant Government solid wall insulation grants available that cover a significant proportion of the costs. This type of walls insulation is suitable for homes with solid brick walls – generally those built before 1920. It is quick and easy to install, causing minimum disruption, and has the extra benefit of improving the property’s appearance and value. Solid wall insulation can also increase the life of the houses and will help with condensation problems.
